Spiritual guru in sex video scandal

A SEX video involving Swami Nithyananda, one of India's most popular spiritual gurus, and a Tamil actress, is creating shockwaves in India and elsewhere in the world, including Malaysia, where he has a huge following.

The 32-year old guru, who is also known as Paramahamsa Nithyananda, was caught with his dhoti down in the video which has been aired by Tamil Nadu's Sun TV and Andhra Pradesh's TV9.

Celibacy

This kind of thing is not uncommon. And to believe there are not similar incidents of misconduct in Buddhist circles is naive.

The harm caused is twofold--firstly the violation of the vow of celibacy, and secondly (and probably more importantly) the violation of the vow against lying.

For these reasons and more, American Buddhist Net strongly supports the establishment of a non-celibate Buddhist clergy. We also believe that Buddhist orders that practice celibacy should provide an easy way for monks to give up their vows of celibacy without losing status within their organizations.
