Pope: Sex can become 'like a drug'

VATICAN CITY, Italy (AP) -- Pope Benedict XVI on Saturday acknowledged that the Vatican's teaching against birth control was difficult as he praised a 1968 Church document that condemned contraception.

In a speech marking the 40th anniversary of the document, Benedict reiterated the Church's ban against artificial birth control as well as more recent teaching against using artificial procreation methods.

"consciousness" contraceptives

I've read all kinds of reports, many of which are well documented, about buddhist monks' being able to consciously raise and lower their body temperature and control their heart rate; about hypnosis being used to dispel allergies and other chronic conditions; about visualization techniques as an effective supplemental treatment for cancer; etc.

I wonder...if all these things are possible, would it also be possible to train your endocrine system through meditation to release the right hormones in the right proportions at the right intervals to mimic the effects of the pill? That way, you'd be using your body's own homegrown chemicals and not the synthetic stuff that hormone-based contraceptives are made of. With close monitoring and time you could adjust your "dosage" to the bare minimum necessary. You could switch on and off as desired. You wouldn't have to worry about prescriptions.

I guess I'm kind of joking. I don't know how this could be a practical solution for the masses. I doubt I'd have the courage to test it on myself!

But still...

I wonder what the pope would think of it? Would he consider such a method of birth control "artificial"?
